What is a LUT?

Look-Up Tables (LUTs) included in out Lutcollection vol.1, are .CUBE or .3DL files that contains precise mathematical instructions to modify a color with another.
When we talk about LUTs we will inevitably enter the world of color grading (not to be confused with the color correction).
LUTs are widely used in post-production of video files to replicate or generate specific looks and hence change the “atmosphere” of a given scene or even an entire movie.

How do you use a LUT from Lutcollection vol.1?

LUTs can be used with specific post-production softwares. The most used are: Final Cut (with specific plug-ins), Premiere, Edius, Photoshop, Da Vinci Resolve and others.

On which files I can use a LUT from Lutcollection vol.1?

They are usually used on video files made with appropriate picture styles or on any RAW or jpeg photograph.
Often though when we apply a LUT to a certain shot or photo we do not always get the result hoped for.
The mistake that is often made is to think that a LUT is born like a file that allows a sort of color correction always perfect, a kind of preset, actually being “only” a color map the final result depends on certain assumptions .
LUTs are generally designed to work best on images that are defined as “FLATs” whether they are from a LOG file rather than RAW, however unless LUT is specifically created for a particular file or shot, subsequent corrections are required to apply them correctly because a LOG file generated for example by a RED camera will not be the same as that generated by a BLACKMAGIC camera and so on.

How do I use LUT on my photos from Lutcollection vol.1

LUT’s allows us to post-produce a photograph from RAW or jpeg files with the ability to fine-tune the final result, especially thanks to the interaction that PS can have with ACR and the adjustment tools in the PS. In PS the LUT is applied by using a Color Consultation ADJ Layer.
