WHAT IS A LUT?
A Look-Up Table (LUT) is a .CUBE file that contains precise mathematical instructions to modify a color with another. When we talk about LUTs we will inevitably enter the world of color grading (not to be confused with the color correction).
LUTs are widely used in post-production of video files to replicate or generate specific looks and hence change the “atmosphere” of a given scene or even an entire movie.
CAN I ADJUST THE EFFECT STRENGTH OF A STYLE?
Each LUT has been developed with a specific ‘style strength’ with REC709 format. In terms of contrast and color grading works best on medium / low contrast images with low saturation (flat profiles). It is possible to adapt the strength adjusting the amount within your favorite editing software. The footage needs to be color corrected before you apply any LUT.
HOW DO I USE LUTs ON MY PHOTOS?
LUT’s allows us to post-produce also a photograph from RAW or jpeg files with the ability to fine-tune the final result, especially thanks to the interaction that PS can have with ACR and the adjustment tools in PS where is applied by using a Color Consultation ADJ Layer.
